KBLA 1580

“Friends of KBLA”

KBLA StudioServing a coverage area of nearly 12 million Southern Californians, LA’s 1580 AM is an iconic heritage station, and the focus of a forthcoming Netflix documentary.

This moment of racial reckoning and political upheaval has laid bare for all to see, the social, cultural, political and economic disparities which continue to exist throughout our nation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said that, “A riot is the language of the unheard.” KBLA Talk 1580 gives disenfranchised fellow citizens a voice; an empowering, sustainable, and restorative language – a safe space to express their fears, frustrations, experiences, aspirations and hopes during this national time of protest and reflection.

The studios of KBLA are located in historic Leimert Park adjacent to the open air museum, Sankofa Park, a 1.3 mile outdoor museum of small parks and public art celebrating the history and culture of Black Los Angeles.

Simply put, we need your help. We ask that you consider making a donation to help us transform the political, social and economic topography by giving everyday people a voice, 24/7. We have partnered with 7th Generation Advisors to establish a Donor Advised Fund so that your donation to our work and witness will be tax-deductible.

We need your help to retrofit the station technologically and engage programmatically. From our KBLA Talk Theatre Studios to our Speaker Series, from our Youth 2 Leaders empowerment program to our Annual LA Progressive Awards, from our community podcast studios to our On-Site and Virtual Events Division, we need your help to make this effort more than just a radio station, but rather a community portal for progress.

To make your tax deductible contribution and be recognized on our Donor Wall Board inside the Visual Studio, please call us at 1-800-920-1580 or email us at info@kblatalk1580.com. Checks should be made payable to 7th Generation Advisors, and mailed to the address listed below. Please notate “Friends of KBLA” on the Memo or For entry on the face of your check.

Thank you for your commitment to social justice for all.

A motion was filed in LA City Council by Harris-Dawson and Price regarding the legality of withholding salary payments to Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas in the wake of his suspension by the LA City Council pending the resolution of litigation brought against him by federal authorities. The motion calls for the City Attorney to report back to the Council in 10 days on the legality of City Controller Ron Galperin’s decision to withhold Ridley-Thomas’s salary.

Both Councilmembers will join Tavis Smiley on Monday for an in-depth discussion to unpack the details.
